Schedule B, is a statistical classification of domestic and foreign commodities that are exported from the United States. All of these commodities must be assigned a ten-digit Schedule B number. The first 6 digits of the Schedule B number are Harmonized. The harmonized system is a worldwide classification method in which the same 6-digit number is assigned to a good regardless of its origin or the language in which it is described. The harmonized system consists of 22 sections, divided into 97 chapters. There are approximately 8,400 10-digit numbers in the 1996 edition of the Schedule B book.

Here is a breakdown of the harmonized system:

I am looking for the HS number for an inkjet printer that I want to export with the rest of a system. The number that I am looking for is 8471.49.3400

84 This 2-digit number represents the chapter in which the commodity is classified

Chapter 84 is titled "nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances; parts thereof"

8471 This 4-digit number represents the heading in that chapter

Heading 8471 is titled "automatic data processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines etc"

8471.49 This 6-digit number represents the sub-heading of the previous number

Sub-heading 8471.49 is titled "other exported in the form of systems: digital processing units entered with the rest of a system, whether or not containing in the same housing one or two of the following types of units; storage units, input units, output units;"

8471.49.3400 This 10-digit number represents the specific classification or complete Schedule B Number.

Schedule B Number 8471.49.3400 is titled "printer units: ink jet"
